Lowell Gregory Smith “Shorty” born September 16, 1967, to Lowell and Helen Smith of Blue
Earth, MN. Shorty was a quiet, humble, hardworking and caring man! Growing up in Blue Earth,
he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening, as well as cruising the belt-line of Blue
Earth. He was an avid goose and deer hunter. He passed his passion and expertise in the field,
woods and water with his nephews; taking them fishing and hunting as often as they wanted.
He graduated from Blue Earth High School in 1986. He played football and was the Vice-President of the FFA program. He also worked for his brother Steve Smith at Smith Concrete in the summer, as well as at Pizza Hut after school and on weekends.
After graduation, he took a position at TAFCO manufacturing and worked there from the late
1980’s until 1993, where he joined Smith Construction full time until 2017. In late October of
2017, he was diagnosed with colon cancer, limiting his ability to work and doing day to day
tasks. He had the cancer removed, did treatment and he remained cancer free the remainder
of his life. However, complications from the treatments/operations as well as sustaining a few
injuries from falling, kept him at Oak Lawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato, MN., from July
2020 unit his death on June 6, 2023.
He died peacefully there under hospice; with a few of his close friends and family who visited
him in his last days. He was a great man, with a big heart who liked helping others.
He is survived by his brother Steve (Nancy) of Blue Earth, sisters Jeanne (Brian) Schofield of
Fairmont, Pam (Jim) Tonn of Winnebago, Diana Smith of Iowa and Wendy (Steve) Brown of
Blue Earth.
He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Lowell, his brothers Harley, Dave and
Marlin.
