She attended Sunday school and services and was in the youth choir. Sunshine and youth group were her favorite church activities. Always the volunteer, she assisted many elderly in the community. Heather carried her faith with her throughout her life.Heather loved to fish, but would not clean them. Fishing was her only reason for skipping school! She was a good shot and got her permit at age 12, when she beat every boy in her class at target shooting. She was always very proud of this fact.Heather graduated from North Kossuth Senior High School in 2001, where she was quite the social butterfly, with too many friends to count, but each one made to feel special by her. Her grades and attendance were always good but, she always thought she could do better. She was a competitive cheerleader (Cheerleading is a sport by the way) which she took very seriously and went on to be team captain. She was a busy girl in high school and committed herself to the council and school paper. She was also active in choir and loved to sing. No matter what she was doing, Heather gave it her all. After high school, Heather went on to cosmetology school to learn a lifelong trade, but ended up hating it when people asked her to cut their hair. She was good at it! Heather was a skilled bartended who lived for the socialization of the profession. Heather worked as a nursing assistant at various times, where that caring heart that she was known for really shined through.Heather''s journey as a mother began in 2003 when Ethan was born. Heather was so excited for Ethan''s first everything. She celebrated every big adventure they experienced together. Ethan was still a baby when, in 2004 Kylee Jo came along. Heather was so proud to give her parents their first granddaughter. Heather put a lot of pride in preparing for the arrival of Kylee Jo, for she knew how lucky she was. Regardless of what Heather was told about bright red hair and the color pink, Heather loved dressing Kylee in pink everything. There was a special calmness about Heather when Evan came along in 2008. He was her guy. They had an unspoken language that was amazing for an outside person to observe. Heather could just look at Evan and he would know. This unspoken communication was continued when Briahna came along early in 2009. It was next to a miracle to watch as Heather just knew what was best for Briahna and what to do in order to take care of this tiny little human, even if it meant calling her aunty to get her to drink her bottle.Heather lived all over south central Minnesota where she became friends with most everyone she encountered. Some quickly became part of the family. The James Brothers were her friends at an early age and her relationship with Ashton especially grew stronger and stayed tight throughout her whole life. All the VanGerpen kids: Scott, Adam, Jeremiah, and Jenny were frequently introduced as her brothers and sister. She adored every one of them, Elias and Aaron Bromeland, Nicholas Campbell, and TJ Diaz were also folded into the family. Her love for them was unshakeable. Robbie Gunzenhauser and his children, Jeffery and Emma were part of her nucleus family and she loved them deeply.Heather touched the lives of many. Many she loved preceded her in death, Mark VanGerpen, Danny Larson, Terry Dean VanGerpen, Justin VanGerpen, Greg Marlow, Robert Barnes, Klint Blackdeer, Al Hearn and her brother-in-law Joseph Collins. One of Heather''s favorite quotes: " It is what it is, and it ain''t what it ain''t, and life goes on til it don''t."
