Oris "Mort" S Mortvedt

Oris "Mort" Mortvedt, age 81 of Blue Earth, died on Monday, February 6 at the St. Luke''s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth.Memorial services will be on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, with Rev. Karl Rydholm officiating. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services at the church Thursday morning. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Elmore at a later date. Oris "Mort" Mortvedt was born on November 24, 1930 to Osmund and Ruth (Thompson) Mortvedt on the family farm in Rome Township, Faribault County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore.As a student of Frost Public School, he honed his athletic ability, becoming a team leader in football and basketball. In 1948, his senior year, he scored 32 points in a single basketball game, the school record that held for more than 15 years. That year he also received the Athlete of the Year award for outstanding athletic leadership.On September 14, 1952, Mort and Evangeline "Tootie" Halverson were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth, Minnesota. They lived on the Mortvedt family farm where they were blessed with three children. For many years Mort served as a member of the Frost School Board and as a Trustee at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore. He was an avid hunter and sports enthusiast, with a fierce sense of competition. Among his many hobbies were playing softball, hunting, shooting trap, fishing and playing cards or dice. In his later years, he became a passionate golfer and loved playing (winning) golf tournaments. Mort also enjoyed meeting the guys in town for coffee, shaking dice and laughing together all morning long. Mort also had a keen ability to tell great stories. He was a clever writer, penning humorous and touching rhymes and stories that commemorated special people and events.He was most passionate about spending time with his family, whom he dearly loved. Whether sitting around the kitchen table for a family meal or providing family fishing trips "up north," time spent together was a time to cherish and remember, thanks to his lively sense of humor and ability to make life fun. Guided by his faith, Mort lived a full life doing the things he loved to do with the people he most loved to be with. He is loved and survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Tootie of Blue Earth, three children: Jason Mortvedt of Blue Earth, Roxy Mortvedt and her husband, Chuck Lewis of Mankato; and Linda Mortvedt of Little Elm, Texas; a grandson, Dennis Anderson and his wife, Tammy; great-granddaughters, Alecea, Kia, and Maila; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceeded in death by his parents, and siblings and their spouses, Marie (Clarence) Baum, Judy (Alfred) Weise and Ona (Jordan) Teigland.
