He was born March 9, 1927, in Blue Earth, the son of John James and Susie C. (Holcomb) Johnston.Richard attended Blue Earth High School where he was a member of the 1945 graduating class. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 where he served in the Pacific Theater in China, the Phillipines, Entiwetok and Hawaii. Richard returned home and attended the Commercial Trades Institute in Chicago, studying auto mechanics and later worked for the Dairy Herd Association until 1949. He was married to Helen I. Meliza on July 17, 1949 in Blue Earth. The couple farmed in the area until1958 and Richard began working for the ASCS as a Bin Site Supervisor until 1967. He worked seasonally for Green Giant and later for Gerring Industries before working full time for Green Giant from 1974 until retiring in 1984. Richard was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church in Blue Earth and was a lifetime member of the: American Legion Post 89 - where he was a past commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars #4580 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 32. Richard is survived by his wife, Helen Johnston of Blue Earth, his daughter, Nancy (& Charlie) Noah of Independence, MO., his son, Dennis (& Debra) Johnston of Hayfield, his son, Dale (& Marsha) Johnston of Albert Lea, his son, Glen (& Connie) Johnston of Owatonna, his son, Wesley (& Wanda) Johnston of Ferrelview, MO., his brother, Wayne (& Sandy) Johnston of Woodbury, his sister-in-law, Betty Johnston of Blue Earth, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Johnston, and his two sisters, Arlene Evans and Opal Hanson.
